A Hippie Chick (Female, Atlanta, 18-21, Student) asked:

My older sister and I recently got into a big spat over my telephone manners. I answered her phone call and said "Hi, I'm busy, what do you need?". She was greatly offended to be treated harshly and was insulted that I tried to rush her phone call. I explained to her that where I was at the time it was rude to answer the phone at all, but I did so because she's my sister and I wanted to help her with whatever she needed. She relies on me for a lot, and I was just hoping to help her as fast as I could to not be rude to who I was with at the time. She doesn't seem to understand that. Is it really that rude to try to take a phone call quickly? How much difference does my tone of voice and word-choice make in this case?

Wow - you sound a lot more friendly on the phone then I do :)

I don't have call display and usually figure it's my family calling - so I answer with "YEAH?"

It means everything. Your tone alone can be offensive to someone, but saying "what do you need" could feel alot like, I know you need something, so what is it? I think if you're too busy to answer or it would be rude to answer because you are with someone else, turn your phone off and get back with her later. People seem to forget that we didn't always have cell phones and when we were out, we missed the call and the world didn't come to an end. The person just called back at a later time.
