There are some women who whehter they have a relationship of their own or not, they want every guy in the world to want them, whether they would want him for themselves or not. They just love having guys salivating over them.
It's a sad existence if you ask me.
You'd have to see how she is with other men to know which of these she falls under.

most likely she has stronger feelings then friendship. she might be in denial of these feelings though.

another explanation is that her guy friend acts differently when he has a girlfriend. I have a guy friend who acts completely different when he is in a relationship or even just causually dating someone. he acts really jerky to his female friends to try and avoid anything that appears to flirty. all his chick friends try to keep him single or at least date girls that allow him to have girl friends.
